Hey I am building my first motorcar, its a 1979 z28. I am almost set up for the engine, so I bought a truck with a running 350 to utilize that engine. I know it is a GM Goodwrench 350 crate engine but that is all I know right at present, I am trying to notice out more merely not getting very far. I will mail service any new info I get. Hither is my problem.....

I got the truck domicile started information technology upwardly and noticed it has a pretty bad vibration. The timing is a liitle off and has bad exhaust leak on left manifold and so its hard to tell how well it is running. But I dont think that vibration should be there. I want to try everything to help determine what the problem is now before I pull the engine. That way I'll know if it is an internal problem.
What can I do???
The truck is an original 305. Perhaps they used the harmonic balancer from the 305. The 305 balancer may work fine. information technology maybe the same.. I dont know.

Perchance its the Flexplate???????

What else can I await for????

Thank you
Brian

Both 305 & 350 are internal balanced engines, so that wouldn't exist an issue inside itself. You are talking solely almost an engine vibration - while in neutral? There is a possibility that the ring has slipped on balancer or someone has put an external balanced one on. Could too be something with the flexplate.

Are yous planning on a rebuild?

Also - welcome to NastyZ.

Thanks for the reply. I have a couple of balancer lying around I think i am going to attempt one and see how information technology does. I may change out the flexplate before I install this in my Z..

I plan on running this engine while I build another engine that I have. I want to have my time and exercise most of the build myself. but I deceit wait to drive my new toy...

Since this is a crate engine I guess I can get the flexplate for a 79 camaro 350 that fashion I can use right starter. I have a complete 71 chevy 350 not sure if information technology runs or not.. only is does have balancer and flexplate and I accept a starter to go with that flexplate.. I may use that one and meet how it runs.
What practise yous think?

Thanks... I accept fallen in beloved with this site..

Have you tried taking off the belts and running information technology that style? If it still vibrates, that would rule out the accessories as a source for the vibration. If information technology fixes it, then information technology is something unproblematic, due east.g. water pump.

Beginning thing you need to do is figure out what "Crate Engine" it is. Early or late manner. A casting number would assist.

64-85 engines are neutral balance on the rear of the cranks. 86 they became a external balance flex plate. Information technology is possible you are running the wrong flexplate. The balancers are all neutral so yous dont have to worry nigh that.

A dead cylinder would also requite the feeling of a vibration. Take y'all verified that the motor is hit on all 8? You can pull one plug wire at a time while it's running, you volition feel and here the motor act up when you pull wires from a good cylinder and will get no change when you pull wire off a non firing cylinder.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have already removed the belts. Here is some more info I establish on the casting and engine code.
casting number is: 10066036
Engine code on correct cylinder caput: 1M1119 0vp

Delight bank check out these links.

According to this guy's info this engine was fabricated in United mexican states nov-19th of 1990.

Hither is another post that has info on casting number but it is not mention the engine code or year built but does mention it is 71-85 replacement engine.

So fifty-fifty though this engine was congenital in 1990 it is used to supervene upon the older pre 86 engines meaning I should have an internal residue flexplate???? Or exercise I need the external balance flexplate?

Could a bad torque converter cause these kind of vibes while in park? The reason i ask is beacause this truck will not pull in any gear. With rear wheels of the ground I can put information technology in gear and the wheels will not plough if I rev upwardly they will turn tiresome and calendar week. This may exist trans not torque converter not certain just idea I would mention it.

Thanks once again for your time.

Will a post 86 flexplate commodities up to a pre 86 engine??
Anyway to expect at the flexplate and tell if its internal or external balance???

I know some of you have said that if the balancer is for a 305 that it doesn't matter. I am hearing two different things. some say all SBC (except 400) are the same. and some say they look the aforementioned but are non and will cause vibrations if using a 305 balancer on a 350. I accept 2 other balancers one on a 350 and one that was said to come off a 350. They both look the same and measure 6.75" in dia. I did not see any numbers on them to look upwardly. The one on my engine looks to exist a 6". it is a little smaller when I compare it to creepo caster'southward. I can't get a skillful measurement on it right now but Its def looks a niggling smaller.

Thanks

Ok. I'm straight on the balancer question. Yous guys were right information technology does not matter they are 0 balance.. I am going to go by a slap my friends for the BS adivse they gave me, and the guy at the parts store that I apply. LOL I'm going to take this block to a shop close to my firm and have him look at it. Maybe flexplate? Peradventure wrong crank?? Maybe a pooty assembly line crate engine non worth my time.. We will run into.

Cheers again for the fourth dimension and your suggestions
